I called Adult Protective Services on my 72 year old mother with dementia who lives in another state. I don't have the money to pursue guardianship on my own and I'm hoping the state of Florida (where she lives) will help me obtain guardianship and move her to my home state of Texas.
She lives in a 2 bedroom condo alone, is a hoarder so stuff everywhere, mold on the walls, etc. It's so bad she thinks people are breaking into her condo and moving stuff around because 5 minutes later she forgets she did it. There is no one in her city that can help her, and she no longer drives. She has to move out by me in Texas but she refuses, thinks she can still be independent, and threatened suicide if I ever put her in a retirement community.
I've read some horror stories, particularly with the state of Florida, about family not getting guardianship after calling APS and the state taking over and using up all the elder person's money. So I'm just looking for some positive stories, any state really, where APS was helpful.
Thank you :-)
