My brother is taking my mother's money - sometimes by stealing it.

I lost my job caring for my parents, but my mother only thinks of my brother and his needs. We both have POA. What can I do? Do I need to get a lawyer? I have no money because I did all the care giving and lost my job doing it.

mamasmama, is there any way that your parents can pay you as their caregiver? That will give you money to start putting away for your own retirement. You would need to draw up an employment agreement which will come in handy later down the road should your parents need a higher level of care and they need help paying for it by using Medicaid.

You mentioned you and your brother both have Power of Attorney. I assume you are joint on the medical POA and the financial POA. Or are the POA's separate? It is not unusual for a parent to choose a son to take care of the finances because of an old stereotype that women cannot handle money :P I remember a case where the daughter was a CPA and the parents chose the son who was terrible at handling money.... [sigh]
