My father is in an assisted living facility. His insulin is paid through the VA, however to get injections covered at his facility, they are charging an extra $1300.00 a month. He is unable to manage this extra expense. He does not qualify for medicaid. Any ideas on how to get insulin injections covered? He is not able to do this himself. Thank you in advance.

I work in an assisted living facility in CT and they are different everywhere. However, usually assisted living facilities are private pay so as a person's care needs go up so, does the cost. He may qualify for Aide and Attendance through the VA which will contribute to his cost of assisted living services. The website to get more info is: http://www.benefits.va.gov/pension/aid_attendance_housebound.asp
I recommend looking into this and applying if he is eligible because it will pay for some of his care.
In CT Medicaid does not cover assisted living, I am not sure how that works in other states. However, if he is homebound Medicare may cover some nursing visits to see if they can try and teach him to administer the insulin, of course that would depend on his abilities. Any VNA or nursing agency in your area can do an evaluation to see if this is a possibility for him.
I hope that this info was helpful.
