Has anyone managed to get VA benefits for a parent?

 If so, did you apply yourself or use a firm that handles this for you for a fee? How long did it take to start receiving benefits? What about long-term care insurance? I've heard horror stories! What should I be aware of? I' m pretty sure I can't get both concurrently. Any thoughts are welcome.
