Maybe shop around and see who offers the most reasonable charge and ask for a payment plan? It cost us 10K for our mom's very basic funeral and we even had the burial plot purchased by my mom when our dad passed. She did not want to be cremated either, so we gave her a one night viewing, a Mass in a Catholic Church and she was buried with my dad. Fortunately we had it prepaid which was the best plan we ever did, so when she passed in the nursing home at 3am, the funeral director came for her by 5:30am. That prepaid funeral was the way to go. Good luck!
Headstone is not so important maybe in couple years. Yes my father bought two plots but he wanted me to be in there. They were divorced when he died.I live in a big city so there's many cemeteries all over and there's never any money left from her social security cause she has so many bills from docs and hospital doesn't have secondary Insurance
Stressedout9603, my parents did the same thing. They did not want to be cremated due to old church rules which had since changed before my parents had passed.
What about a headstone? Does Mom say anything about that? I've seen grave plots where someone had passed a decade ago but there is no headstone. Some have the metal 3"x6" ID plaque placed by the funeral home.
What about the cemetery? Does Mom say anything about that?
What about your Dad? Wonder if he had bought two plots years ago? If you live in a small town, usually there is only one or two cemeteries, you can go to their office to check to see if any plots were bought. You can check to see if they have a financial plan. Same with the funeral home. Have Mom start using some of her Social Security as the down payment and pay monthly. Some time smaller cemeteries located away from the big city are less expensive, same with small town funeral homes.
Freqflyer my mom repeated many times over and over I do not want to be cremated .I'm very worried about all this she doesn't worry about it its all on me .
stressedout9603, there are ways of reducing the cost of a funeral. Of course it depends on what Mom wants, and sometimes religion rules what can and cannot be done.
I know for myself cremation and my ashes scattered. Thus no cost for a plot, head stone, embalming, no obituary in the newspaper, etc. Give me the basics, I've always been fugal during life, and will also be in death.
Funeral arrangements can be expensive. If you are considering burial and worried about money, consider talking to a few funeral homes about what services they offer. There are different packages. I know it sounds horrible, but it doesn't hurt to ask around. Don't be afraid to say that costs are a consideration. Sometimes depending on where you live there might be some assistance from the government for a basic burial.
Till my dad passed, I had no idea how expensive a burial could be. My sister had asked my father wanted before he passed and we had bought the plots before hand. The service was another matter. Some communities also have Memorial Societies that can also help with reduce costs.
