If I'm not POA, can I take my mom?

I live in MD. My mom has been in 4 different facilities for dementia she wants to come live with me, but im not power of attorney can i take her?

Yes, why has she been in 4 facilities? If it's something they can't deal with than maybe u can't either.

Without the POA you could be setting yourself up for a lot of trouble.

Also...her condition will continue to get worse. Between the uncertain nature of her finances, and the worsening condition...you need to get educated on what exactly you are thinking about doing. Contact a support group for dementia and their caregivers. Learn these lessons from someone else FIRST.

If you must proceed....see and elder law attorney...set this up right.

Its good of you to want to care for your mom. But its a lot to take on, its best to try and do as much research as you can to prepare yourself for the hard reality of caring for an elderly person 24/7. Make sure you have all the supports needed. Consider talking with a social worker or elder law attorney as well.

IF you take her in, get a written caregiver agreement of what she will pay for room and board from the POA. Bear in mind she cannot be left alone, so you will be home 24/7 unless you have an aide to keep her safe.
