With Medicaid, can my mother write a check for her granddaughter's wedding?
My mother has money in a checking and savings account, and she wants to pay for her granddaughters wedding. We might have to put her in a nursing home soon. Is she allowed to write out a check for the wedding now?
Very good of your mother to make this generous offer. But as JessieBelle said, I think it would be better for her to try and keep that money to pay for a nursing home. Depending on her age and health, she will need that money.
It depends on how much money she has. If you think she may be in the NH for a while and may need Medicaid, then she should keep her money and give a nice gift, instead. If she should need to apply for Medicaid in the next 5 years, then she could face a penalty period that would be the amount she paid for the wedding.
If she has a lot of money and won't need to go on Medicaid in the next 5 years then it is up to her.
