How long does a person suffer with a UTI before they turn sepsis?

Mom has had several UTIs in the past year, and I don't know how long she had them before we knew - the last landed her in the hospital but fortunately no sepsis
Her roommate too recently had a UTI and landed in the hospital but did have sepsis
