Why pay for Medicare if VA is charging for service as well?

If you stop Medicare you may be penalized big time if you find you need it. Is VA his supplement? Why does he need to go twice a week. Even if they billed Medicare, Medicare only covers 80% of what they approve. Such as: Medicare is billed $1000 but approve only $600 then take 80% of the 600 which leaves $120 you pay out of pocket. Supplementals don't always pay the whole 20%. They have deductibles that have to be met, copays or sharing. So $50 you may had to pay anyway.

Sadly if they have done what appears to be multiple exams and are continuing to not issue a rating...I would change tact. I would file for non-service connected pension plus aid and attendance and then attempt to fight the compensation rating concern. You may need help beyond your local county offices which are often mentioned. Not all representatives are as good as others and not all offices have the experience or knowledge base to sort through the VA maze.

First, was your father turned down for a disability rating even though it's service connected? If so, you may be able to appeal, although I suspect that's what you've been "fighting" for years. Did you have any VA, VFW or American Legion assistance when you applied? The latter two service organizations "know the ropes" and can offer valuable assistance.

Second, I think the VA payment system is a complex one. You might want to ask the social worker associated with your father's medical team. Since he's being treated twice weekly, the next time you go, ask if you can meet with the social worker. I've found them to be very, very helpful and knowledgeable about the labyrinthine VA operations.

Maybe it is the area you are in, but I never found an Attorney willing to give a free hour. $250 - $350 per hour or part there of. Pretty standard.

Even the lawyer who had "free initial consult" listed was not willing to do that for anything other than an injury lawsuit possibility.

I thought it might just be that Boston is just so pricy....but, even out here in small town Colorado it has been impossible to find a free consult.

I would consult with an eldercare attorney. You can usually get a free hour consult that might clear this up.
