The rest home is taking my bed rails off my bed. I use them to get in and out of bed and position myself. What can be done to keep the bed rail on my bed?
Bed assist rails are totally different that bed rails and shouldn't fall into the same category as those deemed restraints. Generally these are very small, only taking up the space of a pillow, but can still do the job of providing a sturdy handhold when getting in and out of bed. Ask about them.
Bed rails are now considered restraints as well. And like Sunnygirl said bed rails are also considered dangerous. People who are confused and who have bed rails and who want to get up in the middle of the night will often try to climb over them.
Apparently, there are laws about the use of bed rails in long term care facilities. I've read that they can be a safety hazard and that's why they are restricted. I didn't realize they were restricted in nursing homes though. I might discuss it with your doctor and see if there are any exceptions or other options to help you. Maybe, others here will have more info on this.
