Am I wrong for expecting my MIL to contribute to expenses?
My husband’s mother moved into our home one year ago. She receives a monthly income, but my husband feels it’s our responsibility to take care of her needs. I believe the money she receives should be used to care for her.
Lisa, I agree with you, but this is a very difficult issue to bring up to a family member who is in one's care. And since MIL has already been in your home for a year, the routine is already set and hard to change.
Hopefully Mom-in-law isn't gifting money to other family members. If she is, that will create a quagmire later down the road if she should need to apply for Medicaid [which is different than Medicare].
One way to think about this, when the time comes for MIL to have caregivers [no way can you do the work of 3 full time caregivers, nor have the experience they have] then the money Mom had saved by living free at your home, she can use to pay the caregivers.
