There r now walk ins with no lip, Moms shower has a bar to hold on going in and one on the wall. The bottom is rough so she wouldn't slide and fall. I opted not to have a wall bench put in because the contractor said he had complaints saying it was hard to get to wash the person's back. I used a backless shower chair. Have a handheld shower head installed with long tubing to make itt easier for someone sitting down. There are kits that combine the headheld with a stationary head in case other people use the shower. If the person is washing themselves sitting down make sure the toiletries are on their level. You can get suction cup soap dishes. I used a cup holder for a shampoo bottle. I did have shelves put in the corner on the shower head side. But wouldn't put them anywhere else.
Check out this website. It has thousands of DIY projects with instructions and pictures and most of them are done on small budgets. Search for handicap bathroom remodel or wheelchair, or whatever specifics you're looking for. I found two that may be useful. Here are the links.
