My mom just turned 65 and now has both Medicare and Medicaid, also has part D. What should her prescriptions cost?

Here in NJ Walgreens handles even the 90 day prescriptions both for Medicaid and PADD.

It takes very short time to get Extra Help. Her part D should cover without the cost of buying anything else. Some Part D's have a premium others do not. Silver script is a Medicare and Medicaid part D provider. Who did she choose for her prescription coverage? That is a decision that should have been made when she got on Medicare and Medicaid.

Check with her Medicaid caseworker and asked if she eligible for Extra Help? It is thru Social Security. If she is accepted into this program, most generic drugs are $3.25 for a 30-day supply. Even more expensive prescriptions can be very reasonable. Example: Lidoderm Patches 5%. They are rarely on a Part D formulary and are about $325.00 for a box of 30 patches. Many people need 3 boxes per month = $975.00. With Extra Help it is $8.25 per Box. Many people are allergic to the adhesive to the generic patches. It's a good program.

I might look into a supplemental, like Silver Script, for medication, which has a monthly premium, but, then see if she qualifies for Extra Help. Extra Help pays the monthly premium, so there is no out of pocket at all or if there is, Medicaid pays it.

If she has them filled at the local pharmacy, most will have only a small copay (under $10). If she has them filled using the mail-in pharmacy, then most will have no copay. Call the 800 number on her insurance card and ask for the pricing.

Medicaid may not pay fully for prescriptions. In NJ when on Medicare and Medicaid you pick a Medicaid authorized supplimental. For my nephew its Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Regularly there are copays usually under $10. With my nephew he makes under a certain amount so gets help and pays nothing for prescriptions. When he was on Medicaid alone, he received a letter telling him what his prescription cost will be. Has she received her cards? Here, Walgreens handles state funded prescription plans. She may have gotten a list of authorized pharmacies. If so, call one of them. They will be able to tell her what her copays will be. If this is recently, paperwork should follow if not received yet.

There probably should be no prescription costs. Medicaid covers that. It is one of financial benefits of the program.
