Mom is in a nursing home and I'm POA. I don't understand Medicare part D. Any advice?

Specifically I need a great plan that covers her $300+ cost of med. I'm paying out of my pocket and I can't do it anymore. But if I find a plan especially if they say it's free, do they take it out of her SSI? It's too much for me to remember and I'm doing ALL of this alone.

In addition to state plans and Part D there is a plan thru Social Security called Extra Help. It pays in conjunction with Part D plan to lower cost even further. I have a prescription that is $975.00 per month. My part D brings it down to $126.00. Extra Help kicks in and it is $24.75.

RomeoRocco2, go to medicare.gov website and click on the green box labeled as "Find health & drug plans." Once there, you can enter each specific drug your mom is taking and compare her estimated costs under all Drug Plans in her area and also under various available Medicare Advantage Plans. That's a good starting point and may provide you with enough information, but if you feel you need more help, various state and volunteer agencies provide can provide assistance. Good luck -- it can be confusing.

Is Medicaid paying for Moms care? If so, you should be getting a supplimental and prescription plan thru Medicaid.

Medicare part D is the prescription part of Medicare. If Mom is low income she maybe able to get a prescription plan thru the state. In NJ it's called PADD. Call your local Office on Aging. They maybe able to point you in the right direction.
