Lisa, the vast majority of family caregivers do not get paid for taking care of a parent.... unless the parent can pay you from their own retirement fund. If yes, then it is important for you to draw up an employment agreement.
Otherwise, you can try Medicaid [which is different from Medicare] to see if your Mom qualifies, and what programs are available. Each State has their own rules and programs. If your State does offer income, please note the pay would be minimal. Note, Medicaid is funded by the taxpayers.
