I need help finding affordable respite care for my Alzheimer's / dementia Mom. Where can I begin?
My marriage is in a stressful mess, as am I. All I want is to get away for 3-4 days! Help me please! I’m having terrible thoughts of not wanting to go on.
Call your Area Agency on Aging. They generally have lists of resources for seniors.
A 3-4 day break would be wonderful! I hope you can arrange that. Respite is absolutely essential for home caregivers. Do you also get away for short periods during each week? Date nights? Meeting girlfriends for lunch?
Nobody can be a 24/365 caregiver and retain their sanity without breaks. Nobody.
Have you looked into adult day health programs? That can provide social interaction for the loved one as well as respite for the caregiver.
Maybe regular respite would reduce the stress in your household. Start there. But be realistic about the impact on your marriage. It may take more than respite to manage that.
Call your local Assisted living and nursing homes. Ask if they have a bed available. It will be out of pocket though. If marriage is being stressed out maybe you may want to think about longterm care.
