Can nursing homes keep relatives for caregivers to go away for different reasons, like the birth of a grandchild?

Rinehart, not yet - do you mean your loved one may need hospice soon? It only takes an estimate that the doc would not be surprised if she passed in the next 6 months. That might be worth looking into for additional services and the respite stay. Most people wait too long to take advantage of all hospice offers.

Long term care insurance might kick in, but probably not Medicare.

Is your loved one on Hospice? Hospice often offers respite services.

Not to mention kinks in estimated dates of delivery :)

Wishing you every success in finding respite care that you're happy to leave your loved one with, so that you can really relax and look forward to the arrival of your grandchild. Watching this space!

Yes, it's called Respite Care. Call around to NH's local to you and ask if they have respite beds and what the cost is. Your loved one will need a TB test and a current physical examination , so make an appointment to get that underway.

Ask each NH what they require in terms of admission paperwork. There may be a minimum required stay.

I would err on the side of having your loved one start their stay at least a week in advance of when you need to be away so as to leave time for you to work out the kinks. There are ALWAYS kinks at the beginning of a NH stay, in my experience.
