Thoughts about an elderly parent who is trying to help out a couple who is "down on their luck?"

They keep making excuses even though my Dad offers assistance in helping them fix up their place to move into? My father is competent, but really too tired to deal with this. He is hoping they leave as grandchildren are coming to visit this summer. I am concerned that he is being taken advantage of, as well as the rest of our family. While this couple is there, the rest of us must pay hotel bills. Often, we can't afford to visit as much as we would like to.

People llike this you cannot be subtle with. They don't read between the lines. They need to be told its time to leave and if they aren't out by a certain date, the cops will escort them and their belongings out. Hopefully no money has exchanged hands.

Can you fib a little bit? If so, tell him there's a liability issue with them living there as if they're injured he could be responsible, and he doesn't have the commercial coverage for live-in people (even if they aren't paying rent) and could be bankrupted. I suspect they won't know that that's a bit of a fib, it is also partly true as they're "invitees", not tenants or contractors.

wow. that's overly nice of your dad. but personally I wouldn't want my parent(s) having others live with them unless they were other family members or very close family friends. you say your dad is competent but elderly. how old is your dad?
I don't know, but for me personally if my parents were elderly and living at home... I would be upset someone was staying full time in their home. I would have to meet them to satisfy my concerns. I guess im just too suspicious and paranoid.

Pamlovesrain, I know this sounds crazy, but show up at the house and just mention in passing that you will be moving in with the grandkids in a few weeks as Dad needs help due to his heart condition. And apologize to them that the grandkids can get out of hand at times... kids, ya know. That might get the couple to quickly move into their home for peace and quiet :)

So Dad is allowing a couple to live with him until they fix their house up. He needs to evict them. First, have him tell them they have until a certain date to move out, at least 30 days. Reason, family is coming to visit and he needs their room. If they don't leave, then he has to file an eviction. They r now squatters.
