My 76 year old mother has had a urinary tract infection for over a month! Any advice?

What can be done to cure this infection?

JoAnn29 Jun 2018
With my Moms last UTI they catherized her to get all the urine. The elderly don't void completely. She was given antibiotics and a cranberry tablet. Since antibiotics cause yeast infections she was given a probiotic. The cranberry tablets and probiotics continued at the home, her last UTI was Oct of 2016 and she had no reaccurance When she passed in Sept 2017.

Here is some information that I found on medlineplus.gov about Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections and the use of Premarin:

https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000391.htm: Some women have repeated bladder infections. Your provider may suggest that you use vaginal estrogen cream (Premarin) if you have dryness caused by menopause.

https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a606005.html -- Premarin: Why is this medication prescribed? Vaginal estrogen is used to treat vaginal dryness, itching, and burning; painful or difficult urination; and sudden need to urinate immediately in women who are experiencing or have experienced menopause (change of life; the end of monthly menstrual periods).

Maybe the Urologist thinks that since the antibiotics did not cure your Mom's UTIs, that maybe the Premarin might decrease the number of UTIs that your Mom experiences. All you can do is try the Premarin cream and see what happens.

I will. I remember my mother took Premarin in the late 60’s for symptoms of Menopause. I believe it’s a hormone. I hope it works for her.

Yes her doctor has ran different test and prescribed her different antibiotics which didn’t work. She is seeing a Urologist which now has given her a prescription that’s a cream called Premarin. It cost $230.00 which is very expensive but will go to her office to get samples. Pray this will help.

I’m assuming she was tested and treated? So, this is a chronic condition. The quick test shows the infection, but the sample needs to be cultured to see which antibiotics will eradicate the infection. My mom had chronic UTI’s. The facility tested her every month and she was on a daily antibiotic. Check with your mom’s doctor to see if this might work for her.
