Any tips for preventing leaks on long outings while remaining hydrated? My mom’s foot and pant leg is wet, yet the pull up is hardly wet.

Truth, from your previous posts, you’ve had this issue with Mom for a while, haven’t you? I know from experience with my husband, who pees like Niagara Falls because he takes diuretics, the only thing that keeps him dry is frequent changes. I think I may also have mentioned to you once about the pull ups being too loose? I use adult overnights on my husband and they’re heavy when I change him! They do a good job.

I don’t have much advice, but I do sympathize with you. On more than one occasion on outings with hubby, he’s had explosive bowel movements. Once at my son’s home that took 3 scrub downs of the bathroom to eradicate. And once at work that he either was too.embarrassed to admit to or, as he claims, he didn’t realize how bad it was that got him fired from his job.

Now, when we go out on very rare occasions I literally carry a diaper bag. We don’t go to moves, restaurants or bars any more. I never know how what he eats will react. Any seasonings or spices on his food can have disastrous consequences. It’s a very sad but true fact of life now.

If Mom longs to go to a restaurant, bring Chux pads along. There are also waterproof briefs I’ve seen on Amazon that go over the incontinence brief.

Something else that will help prevent accidents is scheduling bathroom visits; if she 'lasts' 2 hours on average, make it the plan that you assist her to the bathroom every 1.5 hours regardless of if she has the urge to go or not. As is often the case with incontinence by the time someone feels urgency or that need to go, they need to already be ON the toilet.

If she has difficulty going 'on demand' as it were, her urologist can discuss ways to manually stimulate voiding her bladder by teaching her how to massage her abdomen.

truthbetold, when my dad started leaking with pull-ups still relatively dry, I discovered it was caused by his loss of leg muscle and the cure was found by experimenting with various pull-up brands and sizes and, as you've done, by using inserts. Good, sturdy chair/bed pads are also helpful.

Due to frequent bowel accidents, I always take an emergency bag with all the essentials. It is an unfortunate reality that there is always risk involved on every outing -- to minimize the consequences of the risk you can be fully prepared, but eventually even being fully prepared comes in second to reducing the number and duration of outings. Now our outings are pretty much limited to medical appointments -- attending family events are a thing of the past, which is okay because the family he mostly remembers is his mom and dad who are long gone.
