Not sure if I can ask about meds, mom was just prescribed memantine 7mg for forgetfulness. Does anyone have any input on its effectiveness?
She suffers from Parkinson’s, end stage kidney disease, and macular degeneration. Also has visual hallucinations. She has not been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
What kind of doctor prescribed the medication, are they a gerontologist or neurologist or just your family physician? Did the doctor discuss with you why they felt the benefits may outweigh the risks in someone with advanced kidney disease?
Thank you for answering! The prescribing doc was her neurologist. He prescribed bc of her confusion. She has clear periods but then forgets the day, time. And this is not in the evening.
I would question the effectiveness of the medication with her doctor or talk to a pharmacist. Perhaps the medication is because of the visual hallucinations. However it looks like it wouldn't be a medication that is good for kidney disease. All medications have side effects and perhaps they prescribed it for its off label use.
I guess I'd ask more questions to the doctor that prescribed it. What was the reasoning behind it? Why?
Thank you for responding. It was prescribed because of her confusion. More than not, she has major issues with time of day and the things she has done earlier in the day. She has moments of clarity but I am concerned with the side effects. She is not very strong and she shuffles because of the Parkinson’s. The side effects can cause dizziness. I will investigate further. Thanks again!
Yes. You can ask and hopefully someone who is familiar will answer your question. I have an aunt who has Parkinson’s and dementia. She is on hospice. Her daughter recently started her on CBD oil. She was nonverbal but now is talking. Is going to the bathroom on her own. Is more animated with expression. It’s been like a miracle.
Wow, that’s very interesting! Would I ask her neurologist or order on my own. Happy to hear there has been a positive response to the oil. I need to try something. It seems everyday she gets a little worse. Thank you again for the response!
