Can dementia come on really quickly?

Mom just turned 90 in Oct, all of a sudden she changed very quickly. Memory and being able to communicate was declining. Thinking people were out to get her, people were stealing things, misplacement of things, many other symptoms coming out, declining. Is this possible?
