Reviews of Aricept causing worry. Any advice?

My mom has beginning stage of Alzheimer's..she is 79 and excellent physical health. But is losing her short term memory. They have prescribed Aricept but I'm hearing very bad things. Anyone having issues or good results with the drug?

Aricept has not caused any problems with my 78 year old mom. She’s been on it almost 4 years.

Did she have any side effects in the beginning?

Read “The Oxygen Revolution “ ( Amazon Kindle ) and try the hyperbaric oxygen therapy! Don’t drink tap water that has the neurotoxin FLOURIDE in it or use fluoridated toothpaste. Avoid ASPERTAME sweetened food or drink. (Equal). Play word board games with her. Think about not supporting “big pharma anymore.” Exercise (walks). Good luck.

How would she get a prescription for hyperbaric oxygen therapy under her current health care providers? This person would not be eligible. Hyperbaric oxygen is used to treat bedsores and unhealing wounds, like severe burns.
How would you expect this person’s family to keep their loved one still in sessions where the recipient will need to stay immobile for 1/2-1 hr several times a week?
Totally unrealistic for this family member to pursue at any juncture.
Re: fluoride have you seen the dentition of people from countries that do not offer fluoride in their water? Or toothpaste wth no flouride?
It’s great to offer alternative therapies but alternatives should be realistic.
The OP requested opinions on Aricept and Namenda. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is probably unavailable to her.

I'm often amused at the drug commercials on American TV, inevitably listing the side effects takes longer than the actual commercial and I am left wondering why anyone would think those ads are a positive thing. There are always worrying side effects and people do suffer from them, but many people will benefit or at least, like wren9184's dad, have to reaction at all.

My dad in India used to take Aricept...he suffered no side effects but it did not help him at all and we eventually stopped. This was around 2008.

Where are you hearing " very bad things" from?

Randomized trials show that for some people, cognition enhancing meds are of some benefit. For other folks, the side effects outweigh the benefits.

I think the only way to decide this is to give it a trial run.

Are you sure that they are “randomized”? Too many “studies”, even “supposed” peer group studies are actually done by the manufacturer!
