Aromatherapy to reduce anxiety in elderly dementia patients?

I've been reading how aromatherapy and essential oils can help the elderly with dementia reduce anxiety, relax and stay calm and even sleep through the night. Anyone tried this and does it seem to help them?

TinyDancer, as other writers had mentioned, some people can be allergic to the smells. Tread lightly with finding something that works.

Body & Bath Works sells 2 oz bottles of different scents which are the perfect size to try out. You will see sticker shock. I have bought eucalyptus with spearmint, and it was calming. It's just learning how much to use.

My favorite scent is orange blossom but that isn't easy to find in a lotion or a spray can. Found it in a hand soap at Whole Foods.

Now I just wished the sprays used to clear smells in a room weren't so heavy in the flowery smells. Makes me want to run outside :P

I agree with Sunny. Me personally cannot take fragrances. Some I get headaches. It seems to get worse as I get older.

I would just be careful for those who have allergies. I love some of the oils, but, others make me sneeze and nose pour water. I have to really be careful with the fragrance and the strength that is used.
