VA benefits and Medicaid?

I was informed from the VA that Medicaid can no longer take in to account the monthly benefit my dad receives towards his patient pay for the nursing home he is in. He gets his Social Security and a very small pension benefit from my mom's retirement plus his VA benefit.

How do I approach a not very nice case worker about this problem? I really don't know where to start

Never said it wasn’t for personal needs. The $90 IS aid & attendance. And it can only be used for personal needs.

The $90 is for personal needs

"However, if a veteran and/or spouse is receiving Medicaid and they are still struggling for funds to be able to afford care, they can apply for the Aid and Attendance benefit. The highest amount one can be awarded Aid and Attendance money while receiving Medicaid is $90. And this $90 has to be spent on personal care items only such as shampoo, soap, Depends, etc."

Aid and attendance does NOT get dropped. You can have both aid and attendance and Medicaid. But you only get $90 aid & attendance.

You can't have aid and attendance and Medicaid too. That's double dipping. One or the other.
If person is at home, a and a may work. In facility it is Medicaid.

Good luck it is a maze.

If he is getting Aid and Attendance, he can no longer receive it and Medicaid too. Since A and A is lower in payment, that gets dropped and Medicaid takes over.

I caseworker should know that A and A ( if that is the benefit you are talking about) is not allowed when using Medicaid. If you have a problem with the caseworker ask for a supervisor. If you still have a problem the VA needs to get involved. Were you informed by letter?

I did do some research in our state and it is true now they can not use VA benefits as part of my dad's monthly income. This has changed in the last year or so

Before you take the word of the VA, you should ask an attorney versed in Medicaid, or Medicaid themselves. Because usually when Medicaid is paying for a nursing home, all of the persons monthly income goes to the nursing home and they get a monthly personal needs allowance. A VA employee is probably not well-versed in Medicaid. They be mistaken.
