There are a bunch of free online tax preparation sites if your income is below a certain level. Some states even run their own. You can just buy software to do it for $5-$20 at any income level. It seems like many of the cheap tax prep services are essentially just asking the questions the software asks and types in your response. You can do that yourself.
In Canada we have Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparers, (CVITP). We are trained by CRA and sponsored by a community organization. Locally I prepare taxes with my university and the Salvation Army.
There is an income limit for the returns we prepare, and we cannot do Trust taxes, business income taxes etc.
