My mom was admitted to the nursing home under Hospice for 5 day respite. Hospice paid for the first 5 days. The nursing home took my mom's social security check on the day Hospice stopped paying. My mom passed away the day after they took her money. Will any monies from her social security that the nursing home took be returned to her estate to pay her medical bills? My mom passed away with credit card debt, and unpaid medical bills. The only things she had were a 2004 car, and $200 in the bank. No home, 401k, pension or life insurance. She lived with me, and I had been her caregiver for the past 8 years. I am raw from her passing, and do not know where to begin with the pouring in of her medical bills. She was in the hospital before Hospice took over.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Have you spoken to the business office at the nursing home? If they became her representative payee on her SS account and she was there for one day ( private pay or was she on Medicaid?) her estate may be owed a balance. Start by calling the business office on Monday.
Just note, those medical bills are hers, not yours.
Keep in touch here; we care.
