My mother (stroke, aphasia) returned from a procedure while in the hospital to find a new roommate. The roommate was belligerent to doctors (“you’re not sticking me again - just let me die!), talked to herself using profanity, and would be found by hospital staff smoking in the bathroom. I counted at least 6 different hospital staff, including doctors, struggle to explain to her why she should take a certain medication she was refusing to take. I could have taken all that until she started to raise her tv volume throughout the night. Not wanting to engage her directly, I discretely asked her nurse around 7:30pm if she could ask her to lower the volume. Well that’s all it took. She raised her voice to the nurse, and accused me and my mom of laughing at her - it was clear to me that there was some mental issue
So I felt a bit more sympathetic. However, she then started to raise the volume at 9pm, 11:30pm, 1:30 am, and 4:30 am. At each time I’d tell the nurse, eventually the charge nurse, they’d speak to her, she’d argue with them, claim the supplied headphones (padded!) hurt her. She would then lower the volume then slowly keep raising it and raising it. My mother couldn’t sleep and would keep being startled when the volume really went up. What struck me was that the nurses seemed afraid to approach her and even said there’s really nothing they could do but wait for a new bed that I demanded. Im trying to see their side of things. I know they can’t rip the tv out of wall but if there are rules around quiet time isn’t there more they could have done?

I’d ask for her or your mother to be moved. It’s not good for your mom to have to go thru that , hard enough to sleep in a hospital with all the normal hospital hubbub
