Hi there, My mom (who is 89 and still quite active) is interested in getting a cell phone. She lives in the country, and her landline phone is often not working for one reason or another, and repairs always take a week or more. There is at least 1 Verizon cell tower within 5 miles of her home, so she'd get a signal. I also have a cell phone (Straight Talk) and get a signal in her home, can make calls, etc. I'm 5 hours away from mom and have no car to get to her, and she's at least 90 minutes from a bus station, train, etc.
I want to try and find her a phone with large buttons, nothing fancy...just basic service. There is a small store that carries cell phones but the locals either don't want to help her, know nothing about them, or are "too busy". Is there ANY way I could set one up for her myself? THANK YOU :)
Not sure where this should go, so please feel free to move.

I agree with jkm, if your Mom insists on a cellphone, Jitterbug would be the best. Anything else would be too complex. Life is complex enough without having a telephone where you need to remember steps on how to answer it :P
One time I let my Dad use portable land-line phones so he wouldn't need to struggle to get up off the sofa to answer the landlines phone. But Dad would either forget to place the phone back in the cradle at night to recharge or would lose the phone in the house.
