Odors from the commode!

I have heard of adding a bit of cat litter to the bottom of the liner and maybe in the actual plastic container thing as well. They say the litter can help absorb the liquid a little and somewhat neutralize the odor. I have been meaning to try it for my grandmas commode since we have the same issue.

The plastic does retain odors, even with a liner because I noticed it also. The pails are pretty cheap to replace. Maybe have two, one can sit with a little bleach and water for a few days while the other is in use. I never get odors in the pail I use for dirty washcloths (I keep water and bleach in that one). I use the lid on it as well and it never stinks. NEVER put any bleach or cleaning solution in the pail you are using on the commode while it is IN USE. Beware of splashback! I'm sure you know that. I use a liner and some kitty litter to keep it as fresh as possible.

I agree with isthisreal, clean and air out and then put some baking soda in the commode and then the disposable liner and add some white vinegar to the liner in the bowl, you can do this in a toilet bowl too so when the commode is used the vinegar is already there at work to help neutralize any odors.

Have you tried filling the 'potty' bowl up with ground coffee and leaving it for 8-12 hours? It will take away almost any smell. Just rinse it with soap and water after dumping the coffee out of it. Another one that I found that worked was putting charcoal briquettes in a brown paper bag and leaving them for a few hours inside the sealed up commode. I've never had this fail. I have rental houses and one tenant left chicken to rot in the fridge when they moved out and cut the electricity. I found it a week later - the charcoal saved me from having the brand new fridge hauled to the dump. I'm sorry you're having a hard time dealing with the odor and I hope that one or both of these work for you.

Does it not have a lid on the plastic insert and another on the commode. If not, they should.

Isthisreallyreal's idea is a good one. Vinegar seems to absorb odors. Put a bowl of it where Mom can't get to it. You will see a difference in a day or two.

I would use straight white vinegar and baking soda to clean it.

Then leave a bit of vinegar in the bowl to help minimize the odors from use. You can also put some baking soda in the liner after each change.
