Mother (91) in nursing home. Between my brother and I we have to go just about everyday to feed her lunch. What can I do?

They continue to be short of staff. One CNA feeding (3) people sometimes food is cold before they get to everybody. They change my mother and put her down for naps and they forget to turn air conditioning down, I went there tonight the air was left on 64 and my mother was cold. I called an ombudsmen couple of weeks ago and my call was never returned. The state has the staff there so bogged down with paperwork they can't do their work sufficiently. Is there anyway I can escalate addressing these problems? The nursing home is privately owned.

I would file a written complaint, I would copy your state licensing division, they under law have to investigate such things. This is terrible, so sorry.

Wow, you have already been to the ombudsman without any response. Frightening to think when Mom would be without you. I think it is time to speak with the care facility and to tell them that you realize that they are licensed and accredited, but that, for whatever reason they are not fulfilling the very BASIC needs of their seniors, needs for which they are paid quite a lot of money. Tell them that you must see improvement or you will write the state licensing agency and notify them that basic needs are not being met. That you do not WANT to do this, but you are now aware that were you not coming daily your Mother would not receive the minimal basics of life, and you feel obligated to follow up, that you and your brother cannot continue to come daily at lunch, and that this must now change.

I’d send a snail mail letter to the Ombudsman, and send a copy to your local council or political representative. Mark the Ombudsman’s letter to show CC to the politician. This is more likely to get results, in my experience.

I can understand why you are concerned, McCollum1. I hope others might have some ideas, but maybe calling and/or emailing the ombudsman again until you get a response might be one first step? I am also wondering if other family members of residents might be concerned as well, and could be allies in taking your concerns to the administrator of the home.
