What the What?

When my aunt moved up from Texas to Ohio, she hired professional movers for her furniture. When she finally did get her furniture, a few big pieces were either damaged or busted. My aunt was livid and filed a claim. Now my grandmother is asking if the issue was resolved and how much money did my aunt get back. Aunt asked why did she (grandmother) want to know, my grandmother said that she needed my aunt to pay my grandmother's bills for a few months. Naturally, aunt blows a few fuses and said that the situation with the movers and wasn't her business and she wasn't going to give my grandmother any of that money because she has more than enough to pay her bills. My aunt lives off of $700 per month while grandmother gets over $3,000 a month. To make matters worse, my grandmother intercepted my aunt's mail yesterday and in my aunt's mail were financial statements and my grandmother opened those and started questioning my aunt. Aunt has a total meltdown and said to my grandmother that her finances are not her business and grandma didn't have the right to know. Somehow, my eldest cousin found out and said my aunt was in the wrong (no, she is not). I asked my cousin if grandma was my aunt's husband and to which he said no. I said unless it is a spouse, no one has the right to know my aunt's finances and he was an ass for saying that. Why does grandma think that it's ok to pry with financial stuff and ask for money? My aunt pays the cable and internet bill and part of the electric bill. Now my aunt is seriously looking at moving out.

Aunt should get a PO box. Your grandmother was wrong in opening Aunts mail. Aunt should move out and find a HUDD apt where rent is 30% of her income. Looks like this living arrangement isn't going to work.

Is there a caregiver question in here somewhere? I must have missed it...

Not to seem cruel but you really made me laugh. And that is after a day of major oral surgery.

Evermore99, may I ask why your Grandmother's daughter had moved in with her mother? Is it a case where Grandmother now needs around the clock care, or is Grandmother helping out her daughter by giving her a place to live so she can get back on her feet? My gosh, $700 a month is slim pickings. Is that your Aunt's society security? Is there a back story here?

Who paid for the professional movers? That cost isn't cheap. Grandmother has to take that into consideration. Any reimbursement for the damaged items the daughter gets, helps with the moving cost.

I agree, Grandmother has no right to snoop into her daughter's bank statements or any other mail. Gosh, my sig other and I have under the same roof for over 15 years, and we never open each other's mail.

Hello, post office box, or if closer a box at the UPS store. Unless Grandmother, even with mobility problems, can still hop in the car and drive down the road.

Grandma wouldn't be able to gain access to aunties PO Box, whether at a mail stop store of post office.

Is Grandma aware that opening someone else’s mail is a federal offense and if Aunt gets angry enough, she just might file charges?

Your aunt would certainly find peace if she moved out. If it were me, I’d already be packing my stuff.
