How do I respond to Mom's stories about things that she says she's done, but hasn't? She also want to go home, when she is already home.

Lately, Mom (age 83) has been confused. Yes, she had a UTI a couple of weeks ago and took an antibiotic and was tested again last week. No UTI remained. But, she's still very confused. She tried to tell my husband and I about going somewhere last night to a park. There was a man there. She was with friends. That's all we know from her and it took over an hour for her to come up with these details. She kept saying, I can't think of it. I will think of it. The truth is that she hasn't been out of the house for about a month, although she's told us more than once where she's gone.

Mom has not been formally diagnosed with Alzheimers or Dementia. But the last six months we've had many episodes of such confusion. Should I just mention this to the doctor in September when we go?

She may have had a dream that she was at a park with friends, etc. I have read (on this site as a matter of fact) that those with dementia often confuse dreams with reality. I would defintely mention this to her doctor. Also, there are medications, such as those for heart disease, HBP that may cause vivid dreams.

Witsman4, the more you know about dementia the better understanding when your Mom does things that are unusual for her. Here are some excellent articles:

Oh, please note, when a person has memory issues, and they are saying they want to go home, the home they mean is usually their childhood home.

My own Mom was telling me she wanted to go home and I was thinking it was the house that she and Dad shared, and where Dad was still living. Mom was in long-term-care. After awhile I realized the "home" was where she was raised and all her siblings. Eventually I had to use what are called "theraputic fibs" whenever Mom [who was 98] wanted to go visit her parents.... I would tell her that her parents are visiting the old country, which Mom accepted that excuse.
