How do I get elderly aunt in rehab after she broke arm, can’t get up and down by herself and her 83 old caregiver can’t help her?

The hospital released my hurt aunt and my other 83 yr old aunt and took her home. The had to get firemen to lift and assist just to get her out of car to her bed. Hospital should never of sent her home with someone who can’t help lift her but now it’s done. How do we get her in rehab so they can take care of properly, do we go back to hospital or take her to a regular dr for orders to admit to a rehab?

If the Aunt wasn't in the hospital more than 3 days, Medicare will not pay for rehab. Maybe her PCP can order homecare therapy.

Call the hospital tomorrow and ask to speak to Social Services or the person who was the Discharge Planner for your aunt. Ask them to explain to you what caused them to discharge your aunt to an unsafe home situation with a caregiver who cannot care for her. Did your aunt sign her own discharge? If she has dementia she should not have been allowed to sign for herself. Did she assure them that she would have competent care at her home and they did not research it? Were any other family members present when she was discharged who could have told the discharge planner that she was, in fact, not returning to a safe situation and they felt she needed to go to rehab? Did the fire medics make out any report saying they felt it was an unsafe situation?

In order to go to rehab and have it paid for by insurance, your aunt will have to be readmitted to the hospital and then sent to rehab from there.

Yes she has Medicare supplement, she was diagnosed with dementia but I don’t believe she has, she was removed from her last caregiver because she was being overmedicated. Yes my caregiver aunt does have medical POA. She does not have a lot of money.

Do you know what her medical insurance is, like if she has Medicare supplemental? Has she ever been diagnosed with dementia by a doctor? Does anyone have PoA for her (medically or financially)? Do you know if she has financial means? Appropriate advice will require more info. Thanks
