Is it possible to assign alternate guardianship?

I have permanent guardianship of mom. She is 92 with dementia but still lives at home. I have a caregiver with her during the day. At night, my brother and I alternate nights staying with her. My wife and I are retired and have put our travel plans on hold taking care of my mom. Now we want to take a week long vacation away from home. Is it possible to have alternate guardianship assigned to cover for me while I am on vacation and if so, do I need this person to be court appointed? Your positive responses are appreciated.

I think the simplest thing is to contact the clerk of the court where the guardianship was awarded and ask how the absence of the guardian is handled.

Guardianship is usually most important when the person cared for is combative and resists anyone being in charge, or if there is an argument between family members about who is in charge. If you and your brother get along OK, and your mother is likely to go along with what either of you say, you probably don’t need any changes to the formal guardianship arrangements. What problems are you anticipating? More information might be helpful.

If something were to happen to his mom and she ended up in the hospital, the OP is the only one who can make decisions on her behalf. So ....let’s say she fell and broke her hip, the hospital may not allow her other son to authorize surgery. With HIPAA and other laws hospitals have to follow, I am thinking the OP is probably trying to make sure his brother can make decisions on their mother’s behalf while he’s on vacation.
