Dad has Alzheimer's and he lives at home with mom. How can we talk to him to calm him down?
He doesn't recognize that he is home and constantly wants to go home. When we tell him he is home, he gets upset and frustrated. How can we talk to him to calm him down?
Yes, thank you for all your answers. This is exactly what we are trying to do. He is thinking of his childhood home and is looking for his mom. He remembers the words of some songs and we try to play it for him and sing along.
A common occurrence, his mind is stepping back into his childhood home. All you can do is to try and change the subject. I would suggest that you TT his doctor and get him something to calm him down.
Sorry you are dealing with this difficult, but very common, situation.
It doesn't really work to correct people when they don't know they are home, etc. His brain is broken and he can't remember things properly anymore. As stated above, redirect the conversation.
If he is very agitated, you might have them consider getting dad on a med for that.
He might be thinking of his childhood home. Try to redirect his thoughts to something else. Music he likes, old family pics and stories, classic movies etc.
