Why can't I use a credit card at a skilled nursing facility for my partner when I need a break?
I don't mind paying the out of pocket costs, however to have to come up with cash is not always possible especially when the daily cost is $300 a day. Why can't I use a credit card at a skilled nursing facility to pay for these expenses?
Credit card companies charge merchants (like the LTC facility in this instance) a fee based on the amount of the transaction, typically 1-3%. So if a month's care is $5000, then the credit card processing fee would be $50-150; multiply the fee amount by 12 months and a number of residents and you're talking about real money. Checks cost the LTC nothing to process, assuming they clear.
It is a common practice where I live for a facility to set up a trust account for residents to pay for extra costs, is this not an option where you are? I had an agreement with my mom's nursing home where some extras like foot care were added to her monthly bill, is that a possibility?
The OP wants to use a credit card to pay for her spouses STAY at the facility. Not to put money in his trust account. The facility doesn’t accept credit cards.
