How can I become a friend's caregiver?

He lives at home. He hardly leaves.. stays in his room and does nothing but listen to music. He takes medication but I fear for him.. there are days he will not eat, he has fallen and can't get up. I just want to know what do I do to become his caregiver?? How can I?

Lydia, anyone can be another person's caregiver. Or are you asking about being a paid caregiver? That's a totally different ball game.

If it is the latter, then realize that the vast majority of family/friend caregivers are not paid..... unless your friend can pay you from his own pocket. You would need to draw up an employment agreement stating what are your duties, how many hours per day, and the hourly rate. Plus who will pay the payroll taxes.

Does your friend have family? Parents, siblings, children, cousins, etc. Who is his Power of Attorney? You don't want to step over bounds if there is a Power of Attorney who will arrange for your friend's care.

Really, more info needs to be given. Friends age. His disability.

Does he want a caregiver? What are his health issues? Are you able to devote the time needed to be a caregiver to him? Would he be comfortable with you as his caregiver? He may want to have you remain as his friend in his life, not a caregiver. It’s his choice to decide if he wants care. If you both agree on it then you could move forward with a caregiver contract.

How old is he? Maybe you can ask him if he would like help. But realize, he might need more help.
