Can 90 year old mom have general anaesthesia?

I have worked in medtech for many years and there does "seem" to be a connection between anesthesia and cognitive impact. However, very recently the FDA published an article about metal implants (hip joint, shoulder joint) that contain cobalt and chromium that may actually be the culprit (or a culprit). That being said, I'm not sure what the options are here for your mom, this surgery seems pretty necessary. Do speak to the anesthesiologist. Every surgery has risk, even post-op. All you can do is be informed, there are no guarantees. Wishing you and her a successful procedure and complete healing.

It's not age that is the deciding factor, today many vigorous nonagenarians are having successful surgery. Ask to meet with the anesthesiologist as well when you discuss her options.

We had a poster here several years ago, Demanbro, whose mom had this surgery at about your moms age, Roisin. It cleared up her pain.

I don't recall there being any issues with the anesthesia, but I would advise you to talk to the surgeon about it in advance.

My 89 yr old, mom also has a L3 compression fracture. I was told it would heal with a brace. After six weeks in rehab, she is stronger in arms and legs but still has original pain in hip/groin, which I am told is arthritis. To complicate matters she is in complicated grief from losing my brother almost 2 years ago. I have been told some people “carry their grief”. I am stuck in a holding pattern with her on a lot of Percocet and now an anti depressant. All this being said I would also want to hear if this surgery would be a possibility.
