Carole, try putting "blue sheets" around the toilet. These blue sheets are similar to the puppy training pads, in fact you could try the puppy pads to see if this idea even helps saving you extra time with cleaning up.
If it does help, then go on-line to companies that make the human blue sheets and see if the company sells "seconds", which are blue sheets that aren't 100% perfect. I use such sheets for an aging cat who had dementia, and I was glad such a product was available.
Just like little boys old men have problems with their aim, you could ask him to sit when he goes (a raised toilet seat might help with that) or maybe a urinal would be a better option for him.
