What happens if a parent on Medicaid in assisted living needs to be hospitalized and/or then requires a rehab facility to recover?

My mom is getting ready to go in assisted living on Medicaid. Just thinking ahead, what if she becomes ill and requires an extended hospital visit? Will Medicaid continue to pay for her room til she is able to return and if so, who then would be paying for her hospital stay and associated costs?

Talking to the NH admin about what your state and their "hold" time is the best thing to do. It's my understanding that when a patient is admitted to the hospital from LTC, Medicare takes over just as they would if the patient were coming from home. I don't know about all states or facilities but many LTC NH's are also "rehab" facilities so depending on the need it's not unlikely that when that patient is released from hospital to rehab that they would go right back to their LTC facility under that rehab umbrella. It's more internal about who is paying for what at that point and again probably varies state to state but I think this is part of the process of a patient in rehab then needing a LTC bed and or "Medicaid bed". In general it isn't that a Medicaid room or bed is any different from a non Medicaid bed physically it's again an internal thing which brings it back around to what are the rules/ hold limits in your particular state.

flygirl, are you positive your mother's AL is completely covered by Medicaid? I'm just asking because it's my understanding that they won't often cover the room rent (whether she's in it or not), just services (depending on your county/state). Here is what I found on this website:

Don't make any assumptions or decisions based on "opinions" or guesses of others...call the Dept of Health and Human Services for the county where you mom lives and ask them what is and is not covered.

OP is in Idaho and Medicaid in that state does pay for assisted living :)

It May vary from state to state ever in my experience, your mother would probably lose her room at the AL if she had to be hospitalized for an extended amount of tine. My husbands grandmother lost her room at a nursing home after she was hospitalized for a month. If you are gone for a certain amount of days, Medicaid at least in my state, won’t pay. So you lose your room unless a family member steps up and pays the bill. But I agree with Joann that the AL should be able to answer this question for you! Good luck.

I'm curious, if you lose your room what happens next? Patient stays in hospital until they can find a room somewhere else? This is a hypothetical where patient obviously has no money and family doesn't either.

This is a good question. And one that the Administrator at the AL should be able to answer. If not, Moms Medicaid caseworker should be able to answer it.

Just my opinion, I don't really see Medicaid paying for an extended stay in rehab and rent on a room at an AL.

When ur in rehab, Medicare pays 100% the first 20 days. 21 to 100-50%. Medicaid would pick up the other 50% in ur case. But, the question is, how long will Medicaid pay for that AL?

I agree with this. I believe medicaid will not pay for an empty room at the AL beyond a normal hospital & post hospitalization rehab stay. Like is mom is gone for 30+ days then Medicaid will not continue to pay for her room at the AL.

Medicaid pays for everything. If you're on Medicaid that means you have no ability to pay anything. So Medicaid will pay the hospital, all the costs there and the nursing home.

Actually the OPs mom will be in an AL and Medicaid will likely not pay for her room at the AL if she is hospitalized for an extended amount of time.
