Stacey, I've used Visiting Angels in south FL for several years for the companion care of my 2 elderly aunts, ages 97 and 100. I've spoken to the franchise owner personally, who's own mother has dementia so the owner was very informed and compassionate, flexible and responsive. An agency does back ground checks, pays the employment taxes, has subs for when your caregiver is sick or goes on vacation and is legally accountable for any problems. They have staff with different levels of qualifications so when needs change and increase you won't need to look for another caregiver who meets those needs. You won't get any of this if you hire privately. Will it be cheaper? Yes, but you won't be an employer and the scheduling and overseeing burden will be less intense. I hope this info is helpful to you!
