At most, I'll say "Wow, I'm surprised I didn't hear about that already!" That will acknowledge the statement without really weighing in on it. Usually, I'd just say "Hmmm. Interesting. I'll have to check that out." I generally would not argue, but I have seen others do so.
With Alzheimer's and dementia, we have to enter THEIR reality, not impose our reality on them. That's the bottom line to always keep in mind when dealing with whatever stories they invent, or whatever they believe is reality at the moment.
Wishing you the best of luck dealing with all that comes with this horrid disease.
They are stories. They aren’t harmful to anyone. You are not doing anything wrong by going along with it. It doesn’t sound like it is bothering you all that much. If you were stressed by it, it would only cause frustration for both of you. So, I feel like you are being wise and compassionate.
Your profile says that you are the sole caregiver. Please don’t over extend yourself. Caregiving is a tough job. Have you contacted Council on Aging in your area to receive help?
I would look into Council on Aging now because there is usually a wait list. Be put on the list. They will do an assessment of her needs and you could occasionally have well deserved breaks periodically.
hdakers- you are doing the right thing by going along with your mother's stories. To her, since she has Alzheimer's, they are real. My mother does the same too. She'd come up something that makes sense to her even though what she comes up with can't possibly be true. I just nod and go along with it.
