How much should I get paid for taking care of my aging family member since I would not be able to work?

It sounds like you have not been working for 6 years.

I imagine that your uncle feels like he is being generous paying you for your time when you provided free care to others for 6 years. That is the difficult part when we help multiple family members, they are comparing what they are all receiving and what they are paying.

How much do you want to be paid.

How much can they afford? How long will their money last & what will happen when the money runs out? Depending on their needs, maybe someone with a lower skill set should be brought in for a lower wage, and you hold onto your job. Especially if you have any kind of benefits.

I feel that family could pay very well if they wanted to, but that is just it. My Aunt's husband is very very very tight with his money and I don't believe he would pay me what I believe should be fair! I am a registered nurse and have been for 25 years and the past 6 yrs I have not been able to work in my profession due to the fact of taking care of family members. So, therefore I have been forfeiting my life, livelihood, compensation, benefits, etc., to take care of family members.

My Uncle made me an offer over the phone yesterday to take care of my aunt, my now deceased mother's twin sister, to work for them 3 days a week for $150.00. This was a direct slap in my face when I got home last night, got out my little calculator and saw that I would be receiving less than minimum wage at $6.25 per hour!!! WOW😳

Apparently, I am not even worth minimum wage for my services that would be rendered. REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless your relative is wealthy and can pay you a full salary plus full benefits, you should rethink giving up your livelihood. If you quit your job, you won’t have any insurance or paid time off and you won’t be contributing to a retirement system. If your relative is low income....then every state has programs that pay family caregivers but the pay is minimum wage and there’s no benefits and very very few states will pay for full time care.

Many family caregivers do not get paid.  Does you aging family member have money?   Is he or she competent?   If so, you can discuss with him or her.   If not, you need to discuss with whomever holds POA.   Very few people get paid by government.
