When a caregiver is afraid of being harmed by a dementia patient, or afraid the patient will hurt themself, what can be done (in Florida)?

A relative is becoming increasingly difficult, mean and aggressive. Tantrums, screaming, threatening have become the norm. Recently the patient hid a fork in her PJ’s. Fortunately it was found but I’m concerned for my family, the caregivers.

Are the caregivers from an agency or are they privately hired? If from an agency I would first talk to those caregivers to see what they think about the situation. If they have concern they discuss this with their employer and the agency contacts the family member who hired them and a solution is decided.

If they are privately hired, the person who hired them should have a discussion with them. Was an employment contract signed? If not, and they get injured it could be a huge problem for all involved. The family rep who hired them should probably talk to an elder law attorney. Paying for a 1-hr consult might save much in the future.

Personally, I would be afraid as a caregiver to someone who was violent.

My godmother had ALZ. She became violent. She had to be placed in a facility.

Let a professional medical staff handle her care. You should not have to live in fear.

Hang around, others will offer advice and tell you of their experiences.

Take care. So sorry you are in this difficult situation.
