What options are there to pay a family member for in home care?

debburke, the vast majority of family members who are doing caregiving do not get paid.... unless the patient can pay that person from their own savings account. If that is possible, then the caregiver needs to draw up an employment agreement which is very important should the patient need to go on Medicaid [which is different from Medicare] later on.

Another option is to see if the patient can apply and be accepted by Medicaid. Each State handles their own Medicaid programs. I believe all States can pay a family caregiver [except a spouse], but note that the pay could be minimum wage for a few hours per week. It is worth a call to see from programs are available.
