Wrote in about a year ago re my mom (91). Have been able to put off getting help until now. How do I figure out the best time to utilize help?

I needed to know how to get her evaluated for dementia. I know she had a form of it but want to know what stage she is at. I am in the process of getting her home care but for now it is only for part time. Most of the responsibility will still be mine. Have some private parties that do home health care so will probably use one of them. Trying to determine best time of day to utilize the home care and for how long. Any tips on how to figure this out? She needs to have meals made for her and had some episodes of incontinence. She has a lot of difficulty getting around but refuses to use a walker. Has a cane but forgets it all around the house.

Private parties to do care? Your mom will become an employer and there must be a care agreement in place. If you are thinking about paying this person under the table, you better meet with an elder law attorney first. That sort of arrangement can come back on you in many ways, none of them good. You could make her ineligible for Medicaid, should she need it.

What time of day? I would say mornings to mix-afternoon. Much later could get into sundowning which is difficult even for family that she knows.

I can only relate what’s working for us, subject to change of course. My dad doesn’t have dementia, but is physically very frail. His helper comes in the mornings. He takes a shower when she arrives, mostly independently, though she helps some, she helps with dressing and then makes his breakfast. There are frequent bedsheet changes and laundry to be done. She takes him on any errands and appointments. She makes his lunch and preps a dinner that she leaves in the fridge and leaves. He sleeps off and on the rest of the afternoon. My dad uses a rollator, can’t walk a bit without it
