Please help me! Joe has 3-6 months to live and I want to be his live-in aide. he's approved 24hr care. How can we make this happen in NY?

He is already medically approved APPROVED for 24/7 New York state

Who approved him for 24hr care, Medicaid? This is what I found. Since you have training thats a plus.

" The NY State Medicaid CDPAP program. CDPAP, or the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, is a New York State Medicaid program that allows beneficiaries to hire their family members and friends for caregiving services. You read that right, with CDPAP your family members can get paid to take care of you.Jul 18, 2019"

Approved for what? Start by calling your local Agency on Aging. Should be able to find it by Google.

Before you agree to do this, you need to think about some things.

1. Do you have a job now? Sounds like you'd have to quit to take care of Joe. You may be that good of a friend that you're willing to take a pay cut or no pay at all... but after Joe passes, will you be able to go back to the job you gave up? Will you be able to get another job? Will you lose insurance coverage if you quit?

2. Is hospice involved? You can't take care of a dying person alone; you'll need hospice nurses and staff.

3. Are you okay with bathing him and/or helping with bathroom things? He may not need that now, but he will.

4. There is no guarantee Joe will be dead in 6 months. These are estimates. Sometimes people don't live as long, but sometimes people beat the odds and live longer than doctors expected. If he lives longer, will you still be able to care for him?
