Mom (84) had a urinary tract infection. She was moved from the hospital two days ago. She is now at a rehab facility. Help!

She can barely walk. She did well at her assessment yesterday. Today she walked a few steps with a walker. Then would not do the rest of her therapy. She has told my sister and myself that she is going home. She cannot care for herself. She has an IV and a catheter. She is now refusing to take her medications. HELP!

I am with Barb. UTIs are not all the same. Each responds to a different antibiotic. My Moms antibiotic had penicillin in it, Mom was sensitive to the penicillin. Her roommate had problems finding the right one. A culture needs to be done to find out what type of bacteria is causing the UTI. Usually they start with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Not always the best one.

Wait until she hits 90 !!! How fun will this story be? or different....
I went to visit an acquantinice. Boy did that go wrong totally. Next day, she tried breaking mom out of facility with walker and IV in tact. Almost hit an emplyee of facility in the parking lot, with her mom in gown and iv in arm...
And she tried to say, I was somewhat involved. I saw the day before.... I had nothing to do the the "braking Bad" part.

I am having a chuckle picturing your cheeky Mom hobbling out the door & down the street managing both the walker & the IV pole... trying to fit the IV pole into a waiting taxi...

I doubt she'd get far!

Maybe respond to her emotion (not her escape plan). Yes you sympathize ❤️, you understand she wants to go home - so do you, & she will... when she takes her medicine like she needs to & gets better.

Are you in touch with the Social Worker at the facility?

If this refusal is new behavior, please make sure that she is tested again for a UTI.
