My father has dementia. Is he starting to hallucinate?

He’s never had hallucinations before. He lives in our guest house. He said the other night a pack rat woke him up because it bit him on the finger, and it hurt pretty bad. We live in the desert so it’s possible I guess one could have gotten in the home, but I find it strange it didn’t leave a bite mark on his finger. Don’t they have pretty large teeth? So I guess all I can do is call an exterminator to have them look around. My father tells me last night he had a dream that kittens were in his home and sleeping on top of him. I’m wondering if he’s dreaming of rats and kittens or hallucinating or what? Do hallucinations usually come on at night? (He has vascular dementia. Perhaps the stage before not being able to bathe or dress yourself). Thanks for your help.

Some medications can cause vivid dreaming, too, so ask his doctor about that as well when you're having him checked for the UTI.

If your dad is dreaming these things while asleep and remembering what he dreamt about, those are not hallucinations. Hallucinations occur during the day while one is awake. If his dreams are somewhat benigh, I wouldn't be worried about them other than to acknowledge his concern. If they're causing him distress I would comfort him as best you can and contact his doctor.

That said, having VaD can cause hallucinations but they would occur when he is awake. His dreams are not hallucinations.

Yes. He says the kittens were a dream. However he insists the pack rat actually bit him while he was awake. Not a dream. I just find it hard to believe since they have such large teeth and he didn’t have a bite mark on him. So i believe the pack rat was a hallucination or perhaps a dream that felt so real he actually believed it happened perhaps? Definitely going to look into him having a uti. I just hope his dementia has not progressed and now he’s hallucinating due to dementia

when she got it, you instantly knew... her brain would just be totally offset. No doubt. And, yup, 99.9 % of the time --- UTI.
Simple to check, and easy to fix.

have him checked for UTI... most common with this stuff at that age. Honestly the easiest of all tests.

blood flows throughout the body you know. if it gets too bad, it can can affect the brain.

take him in and get the UTI test done and evaluated, then go from there.
